Why Wallpaper?

How and When to Use Wallpaper

In 2005 wallpaper wasn’t chic when I got one of my first design gigs which was for a wallpaper company. It was a terrible economy to find a job no less a design job in a region that wasn’t New York City or Los Angeles.

By 2015, when I started Crystal W Design, wallpaper was finally becoming cool and how excited was I to use my vast design experience having designed rugs, stationery, and wallpaper.

I could finally design wallpaper for myself.

Wallpaper is now a consideration like paint colors, fixtures, and finishes in interior design projects. I WANTED to do wallpaper but realized how expensive it is. It is so chic and adds personality to the vibe of your space. I still want to in a small section not enveloping the room floor to ceiling.

In the past, wallpaper was a pain to remove so no one wanted to deal with that but it’s easier with peel and stick. Very cool.

In fact, It might almost be easier and cleaner than the hassle of painting. That being said, you might still have to do some paint to get the look you are after. With Peel and Stick paper, the space must be dry, smooth walls, not in a bathroom, maybe it’s a bedroom, powder room, foyer, accent wall, bookshelf/china cabinet backing, cupboard, closet, etc.

Wallpaper Factors

  • Creates an airy, welcoming feel in otherwise confined spaces

  • Quickly achieves a dark moody theme without lots of paint coats

  • Reinvents and adds character to both residential AND commercial spaces

  • Great in small areas with an opportunity to make a statement

  • Repositionable, removable, and renter-friendly (peel and stick mainly)

 New Ways to Use Wallpaper

A fun trend is wallpapered ceilings and papered “picture frame panels” Peel and stick has been used by DIYers in creative ways well beyond walls such as lining the inside of furniture cabinets, drawer lining, and more!

If you are papering a moisture-heavy space like a bathroom or kitchen, definitely use a professional installer and use a more traditional paper that uses paste so that it doesn’t start peeling over time.

Also, if you live in a coastal are,a this might still be an issue but I imagine a local professional installer can advise on that.
